The organisers of the public engagement event 'Crash Call for the NHS' have hailed Saturday's turn-out as a huge success. Thousands signed up to attend the free event held in London.

NHS staff volunteered time away from their busy work-schedules to teach CPR to the public at Shepherd's Green on Saturday afternoon in the baking heat. Hundreds of staff taught CPR to members of the public, while chatting to them about the dangers the NHS faces. The rally was hailed as a huge success.

Crash Call for the NHS was organised by three junior doctors in order to improve on the engagement between the public and healthcare staff over key issues facing the NHS. Many NHS interest groups offered support and were in attendance, with official support coming from the likes of the BMA and the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Speeches were given to the bustling crowd from various pro-NHS groups, including Drs Mohan and Collier, Co-chairs of the BMA's Junior Doctor Committee, Dr Jacky Davis, Co author NHS For Sale, and Dr Mehdian from NHS Survival.

Dr Mehdian gave a speech addressing the need for an independent Royal Commission into the future of the NHS. NHS Survival co-chair Stella Vig was also at the event, speaking to NHS staff and members of the public about how a non-partisan multi-disciplinary commission could help find ways to maintain the NHS in a sustainable fashion independent of governmental control.

The event highlighted the need for the public, patients and professionals to come together to ensure long-term stability for the NHS.
